Materials 

  • MDF Sugar Skull Kit
  • Powertex Yellow & Black
  • Easycoat Glossy
  • Brown Bister spray
  • Hairdryer
  • Paintbrush
  • Colourtrix: Bronze Gold & Rich Gold
  • Accessories: Chain, Tassel, Gemstones, Flowers, 3 Pieces cork & 2 pieces Scrapbook paper

Step 1.

Remove Sugar Skull, bits and pieces from your MDF kit. Use Scrapbook paper of your choice and trace the back of the Sugar Scull onto the paper. Cut the pattern out… make sure when you trace the pattern that you use the mirror image. Use Easycoat Glossy and apply a layer onto the MDF board and stick the paper onto the board. Make sure that you apply enough Easycoat Glossy so that the paper sticks. Use a damp clothe and wipe out any creases. Apply another layer of Easycoat Glossy over the paper to finish. Set aside to dry completely.

Use Powertex Black and paint the inside of the MDF board and set aside to dry, then paint some of the Accessories (see picture below). Also use Powertex Yellow (or other colour of your choice) and paint the flowers and extra bits. Make sure that you paint both sides in case some pieces hang over the edge when decorating. When the inside of the front is dry use Powertex yellow and paint the whole front piece. I used my hairdryer to speed up the drying process.

Use your second piece of Scrapbook paper and tear out a mask piece for the face. Use Easycoat Glossy and follow the same procedure as before and glue it on. Remember to seal it with another coat on the top. Paint a layer of Powertex Yellow onto the bottom of the face and spray with Bister Brown. Use the hairdryer on hot and create a crackle effect. Remember (for thicker cracks use more Powertex in certain spots and for thinner cracks less Powertex). Leave to dry completely.

I always play around with some ideas before starting to decorate any art piece… which is what I did with this MDF Sugar Skull. I was very excited to get started because I already had a picture in my mind where to place each piece. I first glued the chain and tassel on and the extra accessories that I gathered from my supplies. I then followed my own ideas and used Easycoat Glossy to glue everything on (as in pictures above). This is where your own creativity can come in… play and have fun!

I used some of the Scrapbook paper and put it under the mouth to make it look like white teeth. Put aside to dry completely. Now use 3 pieces of cork to glue the front and back parts of the skull together… use two on the top of the head and one onto the chin to give it a 3D effect. Apply Easycoat Glossy onto the 3 cork pieces and stick the front piece onto the 3 cork pieces and let it dry. Then use Colourtrix Bronze Gold to highlight some areas to complement the Bronze Chain and Tassel. Complete the Sugar Skull by adding some bling onto the flowers. I used the same Bronze colour gemstones and also a Bright Yellow gemstone.

This was so much fun and I love my end result!
